DC Fire & EMS Department Receives Large Donation to Expand Their Community Outreach Program

This story comes to us from Pete Piringer of the D.C. Fire Department:

It is often said that education is our most powerful tool.  Fire safety education programs, which teach people how to prevent fires and how to react in the event of an emergency, are extremely powerful in preventing avoidable injury and even death. In order to better educate their community around fire-safety, the DC Fire & EMS Department will expand their current education program.

Fireman’s Fund is donating $16,000 to the DC Fire & EMS Department so they may purchase fire safety training equipment, including audio and visual training equipment and “take home” fire safety brochures.

Vincent Gray Officially Elected DC Mayor

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Washington voters have elected D.C. Council chairman Vincent Gray mayor, a result that had been expected for more than a month after he won the city's September primary.

Voters on Tuesday picked Gray, who had no Republican opponent in the general election.

Voters also chose Kwame Brown to replace Gray as the head of the D.C. Council and sent Democrat Eleanor Holmes Norton back to the U.S. House as the city's delegate. In a referendum, voters decided that they want to elect the city's attorney general, a position that is currently appointed.

Finally, voters re-elected six members to the 13-member D.C. Council: Phil Mendelson, David Catania, Jim Graham, Harry Thomas, Tommy Wells and Mary Cheh.
