DC Department of Health Condom Distribution Campaign Wins International Creative Award
Health

From Mahlori Isaacs: Today, the DC Department of Health (DOH) announced that its Rubber Revolution campaign that is geared towards educating and promoting condom use to prevent HIV and STDs, won the Hermes Creative Platinum Award bestowed by the Association of Marketing Communication Professionals. This honor marks the second prestigious acknowledgement the Rubber Revolution campaign has been awarded; last year, Rubber Revolution received the Bronze Anvil Award of Commendation from the Public Relations Society of America. In addition, DOH recently launched a new, more user friendly version of its RubberRevolutionDC.com website for smartphone users.  The new mobile website makes browsing for information, as well as ordering free condoms from the website easier for District of Columbia residents using smartphones and other mobile devices.

“DC continues to be on the health cutting edge with an award-winning campaign that puts innovative technology into the hands of DC residents to get free condoms and keep them and their partners safe from HIV and STDs,” said Dr. Mohammad Akhter, Director, DC Department of Health. “By changing the conversation about condoms and making condom availability more mobile, DC is on track to reduce the impact of HIV and STDs on our residents.”

The Hermes Creative Awards is an international competition for creative professionals involved in the concept, writing and design of traditional materials and programs, and emerging technologies.  Entries come from corporate marketing and communication departments, advertising agencies, public relations firms, design shops, production companies, web-based innovators and freelancers.  The Rubber Revolution campaign was one of more than 500 winners from 4,700 entries.  Also, the Rubber Revolution older adult focused ad “Social Security” won an honorable mention.  Octane LLC developed the Rubber Revolution campaign for the DC Department of Health.

Residents who access the Rubber Revolution website from their mobile devices will be automatically redirected to the mobile site, where the layout and functionality will adjust to fit the smaller screen. Visitors will also be able to order condoms for home delivery and the 'Use My Location' function will let mobile users find the closest free condom distribution locations.

RubberRevolutionDC.com is a condom use and education website that serves to promote the DC Condom Distribution Program, sponsored by the DC Department of Health. The program aims to increase condom availability and education in the District of Columbia. In 2011, DOH distributed almost five million condoms and the District is one of a few cities in the country with a large-scale public-sector condom distribution program.
