Tigerlily Empowers:  3rd Annual Ball Benefiting Young Women with Breast Cancer

On Friday June 24th, the Tigerlily Foundation hosted its 3rd Annual EmPOWER Ball to raise awareness about young women with breast cancer. The Mistress of Ceremonies was ABC 7 News reporter Natasha Barrett with the featured keynote speaker address presented by Fox News correspondent Jennifer Griffin who was the receipient of the Transformation Award. The Tigerlily Foundation also honored the recipients of the 2011 Inspire and KM Warrior Awards, Dr. Michael Schultz and the family of Michelle Bynum, respectively. Evening presenters included Natasha Barrett, Surae Chinn, Reporter, WUSA 9 and Tony Perkins, Fox 5 Morning News.

The evening was full of live entertainment featuring special Guest Rashida Jolley, a fellow Washingtonian and world famous harpist that is currently on tour with Lady Gaga.  Special guests also included  speeches from members of Congress, dinner, signature cocktails, live and silent auction, local business leaders, and inspirational stories from young breast cancer survivors.  One story in particular that brought tears to the whole room that evening was from Reid Bynum the  eight year old son of Michelle Bynum, who spoke with great humor and homage to his now deceased mother who was the receipiet of the KM Warrior Award.

Sponsors included CareFirst Blue Cross Blue Shield, Clark Construction, Clark Enterprises, Inc., CGI, The Full Cup, the Gannett Foundation, Medco Health Services, BackFlow Technology, LLC and Moore Cadillac.  Media sponsors and supporters include ABC 7/WJLA-TV and News Channel 8, Bisnow, KStreet Kate, Metromix DC and Clear Channel’s Hot 99.5 as the official radio sponsor.

The Tigerlily Foundation was founded by Maimah Karmo, who was diagnosed with Breast Cancer at the early age of 32.  Since 2006, Karmo and the Tigerlily Foundation’s programs have assisted young women around the world living with breast cancer by providing a variety of family and life services starting at diagnosis, through treatment and beyond. Services include education, chemotherapy buddy programs, buddy bag programs, financial assistance, meals, life management support, and empowerment services. The organization empowers women to celebrate their lives every day by harnessing their personal power.
