Lawyers Indeed Have a Heart: Annual AHA 10K race hits Georgetown

On June 11th, 2011, The Lawyers Have Heart 10k (LHH) brought some 5,500 participants to the Georgetown waterfront for a race along the C&O Sama on Saturday, June 11, to benefit the American Heart Association (AHA).  Preceding this weekend event was the American Heart Association's Recess by the River Event on June 7th, 2011 which was a children's interactive outdoor event promoting nutrition and healthy lifestyle to high risk inner city children in Washington, DC area.

The LHH race, the largest 10k in Washington, began at 31st and K Streets at 7:30 a.m. and was followed by a party at the Washington Harbour.  Approximately 150 Washington law firms participate each year and top fundraisers win the Biggest Heart award, a coveted title.

According to Hilary Sama, a development director at the AHA, about 50 percent of participants are from the legal community and both Georgetown businesses and residents have always been welcoming of the race and accommodating.  The event also featured, a tribute wall at the Washington Harbour allowing loved onese to write a note to someone they've lost to heart disease and runners could pick up a tribute bib to wear for someone they were honoring with their race.  Post-race a party at the Washington Harbour featured food, including snocones, and sponsored booths handing out free takeaways.

The event featured Miss D.C. International 2010, Chelsea Rodgers singing the National Anthem and the "Probono" brief case to kick off the races off.  As the current Miss Washingtonian Galaxy holder I help led the walking contestants down the race course.  I wanted to participate in this event as a pageant title holder but also as lawyer myself.  When I told some friends and family that I was participating in the event, the running joke was "I did not know lawyers had a heart."  While lawyers may have the reputation of being aggressive and sometimes empathetic, I can say after this event, that I in addition to the other lawyers who participated in the race are proof that lawyers indeed do have a heart.  The race this year raised over $400,000 and whether you like it or not at some point in everyone's life, one will need a lawyer.  At the end of the day, lawyers represent persons in need and on June 11th for the American Heart Association, hundreds of lawyers threw off their suits and laced up their sneakers and did just that.
