Redskins fever is far from being over.  The students at the Maury Elementary DC Public School (DCPS) After School program this past Friday gave Josh Morgan of the Washington Redskins a huge welcome back celebration.  Josh Morgan is both an alumni of the Maury elementary and the DCPS After School program.

The celebration included cheerleaders, step team, songs and even a presentation by their robotics program.  In the midst of the celebration, was a very important  issue that the Maury school is facing.  The school is facing the closure of its DCPS afterschool program due to their loss of their title status for certain income requirements to be eligible for the program.  Many parents attended the event and expressed their concern that losing the DCPS afterschool program to a private company is just the beginning of public education and programs becoming privatize.  Most parents along with the Principal Carolyne Albert-Garvey agree that the private school program should be made to coincide with the DCPS standards and sliding cost scale as to ensure a smooth transition and protect those school families that are not middle class so that the program remains affordable and the same types of activities are kept.  When asked about the DCPS after school program disclosure, Josh Morgan said,

"That would be terrible especially after what I saw today.  When I was here we only had basketball and cheerleaders.  These kids have so much more now.  I am product of both DCPS and its after school programs.  I hope that they can fight to keep the program."

What are your thoughts on the closure?  As DC because more upper middle class and gentrified the future of DC public education and programs will probably be forever changed.
