Creativity Cures: VSA DC and Children's Medical Benefit

Thursday night, as the bustling rush of downtown employees exiting their jobs for the day, in their midst was a positive and creative light coming from the VSA  (Very Special Arts) DC building at 16th and L for the Creativity Cures event.  Creativity Cures is a fundraiser, silent auction, concert, and exhibition showcasing artwork done by youth from VSA DC and Children’s National Medical Center / New Horizons.  In my role as Miss Washingtonian Galaxy coupled with my youth building platform, I was honored to participate in this event that supported Washington's disabled youth and young adults.

VSA Washington D.C. is a community-based non-profit that develops, implements and supports arts-integrated education and employment programs for youth and adults with special needs. VSA Washington D.C. offers the following: the ARTiculate Training Program, The ARTiculate Gallery and The School for Arts in Learning Public Charter School.

The colorful and eclectic exhibit shared the stories of those who use the arts as a vehicle to communicate and ultimately inspire.  The crowd was serenaded with sounds of instrumental music while they dined on delicious heavy h'ordeurves.  The evening was highlighted by a touching slideshow which included interviews of VSA staff and student artists and concluded with a special poem read by a featured artist of the exhibit, Johhny Sabat.  Those who attended could buy artwork directly from the exhibit and also bid on silent auction items such as cooking lessons or even travel packages.  100% of proceeds went to support VSA programs.

In the ways that many disabled are limited, these young artists have no limits through their artwork.  Creativity Cures is a therapeutic movement that enhances the lives of our young artists through education and learning.
